| COMACCHIO THE SMALL VENICE |
 |
Comacchio has been for centuries a city amidst the waters, where canals have been used as roads.
Water still very much fashions the town, criss-crossed as it is by a network of canals and bridges connecting its various districts made up of terraced, pastel-coloured houses that conceal entrance halls leading to long corridors opening up to inner courtyards.
The centre is ideal for a pleasant, care-free stroll, leading the visitors to Palazzo Bellini and top the Trepponti.
Close by there's an archaeological museum which exhibits the cargo of a Roman merchant vessel found at Valle Ponti.
Other landmarks are the Torre dell'Orologio, the Loggia del Grano, the Cathedral and the long archway of the Capuchins leading to the historical eel-processing factory, known as the Manifattur dei Marinati and finally to the church of St. Mary in Aula Regia.
Being on the edge of spectacularly beautiful lagoons and wetlands known as “valli” that seem to knock at its door, the town can rightly lay claim to being the unrivalled capital of the Po Delta Park. |

| ABBEY OF POMPOSA |
The abbey of Pompous is a series of constituent buildings, built by the most famous Benedictine monasteries of the medieval age.
The Basilica, the Refectory, the Capitulation Room and the Court constitute the heart of the abbey. To these it has added, in successive period, the majestic bell tower.
The Benedictines build the abbey in the VII century d.c. Around year 1000 the abbey enjoyed large prestige in the region and the role of the abbot was of great importance. The Benedictines remained until in the beginning of the XVI century, when all the monastery families transferred to Ferrara.
It became private property and therefore became a farm.
After that it was transformed to a State national monument. The complex was visited during the following centuries by varied eminent characters, between which the Barbarossa and Dante Alighieri.
The architecture is a crossing between the roman style and the Byzantine one and you can recognize elements of the school of Ferrara and Bologna in the works of art. |
